Despite the controversial beginning of denim, the definition has taken a one track direction internationally, speak of denim; speak of jeans. It has become accepted that the word denim is derived from the French ‘Serge de Nîmes’. The advancement that this material has made during the centuries has renounced the original purpose for which it was made – heavy labor.

Thanks to Levi Strauss and the dedication made in taking it from a fated beginning in which we show off faded blue jeans, black jeans you name it at every occasion with just about any shoe to match. People in the 1950´s found jeans more comfortable a hundred times more resistant than normal clothing, and through this taste, a lot of models can boast its beauty. With time, shorter clothing and sensuality became acceptable, and through this denim skirts were invented.

Originally, denim was used by men in the form of pants. This took place through its acceptance in the US navy in 1901 allowing sailors the comfort of rolling up the knees and being able to jump overboard if there was a threat. Its durability was considered by Jacob Davis, a Nevada tailor, but unfortunately due to lack of funds he could not patent his seam sears. From then jeans have entered movie scenes with famous actors and actresses stamping their approval on it for worldwide acceptance. As the years went on other brands entered the fashion world such as Lee Jeans, Wranglers etc.

It did not stop there as denim was frequently used by cowboys and was associated with the Wild West. Many films have documented evidence of this and today though we are not in the Wild West, we have adopted jeans as a casual or formal wear depending on the occasion. They have left their simple forms to more adorned forms with beads, cuts, and weaves.

Jeans were also considered a sign of rebellion used my most teenage people in the late 1950´s. Women began to use them as well as  many had put aside the popular belief that it was originally intended for  men and as a result attired themselves with pants and denim skirts, giving way to cowgirls.

The denim skirt was born due to the fact that many pants got worn and instead of throwing them away, many people were prepared to cut and transform them into denim skirts. From constant remodeling of denim pants, shorts were born, duffle bags and a list of other items came to birth. Who can forget denim skirts with long leggings used back in the days as a fashion symbol?

Most movies passed scenes of this trend and many people began to accept it as social thing. Though there were many critics from a conservative’s point of view this did not stop it from turning into the well known mini-skirt that we all know. Being so different, so long lasting and so comfortable had only to guarantee this.

Today, one can find a wide range of denim skirts for any size and any occasion from the traditional founder Levi Strauss, Lee, Wranglers, Guess and  Ralph Lauren just to name a few. Denim skirts are no longer a symbol of vulgarity but rather a fashion trend adopted by many tropical countries and fashion conscious people..
